The police dog, seeing this bag at the airport, began to whine and look at the border guard, attracting his attention
International Airport “Rafik Hariri” in Beirut – the only passenger and cargo airport in Lebanon. Therefore, it is always crowded with people who want to visit this Middle Eastern country.
Thousands of people pass through the terminals of this airport every day, transporting a huge amount of cargo and a variety of luggage sent to all directions of the world. With such freight and passenger traffic, safety is of paramount importance.
Therefore, many police officers monitor security and order. But there are still other inconspicuous and little-known law enforcement officers – search dogs that have received special training. They help detect suspicious packages or luggage containing prohibited items. These can be narcotic or explosive substances and even large sums of money.
Such dogs are trained to detect the desired odors and «report» this to dog handlers, without barking or creating noise. When dogs find something, they direct their nose and gaze at a suspicious object, while remaining motionless. The dog handler accompanying the dog notices changes in the animal’s behavior and organizes a check of the discovered luggage. The system is simple but time-tested and works almost flawlessly.
A strange find
When one such dog walked through the airport building, no one paid any attention to him, knowing full well that the pet was on duty. And no matter how much I wanted to pet and caress the good-natured animal, it was absolutely impossible to do this, so as not to disturb it and the police. Therefore, people passing by could only smile at the dog handler accompanying the dog.
Suddenly, in the cargo terminal, the dog pointed its muzzle at one of the boxes passing through the terminal. The label indicated the point of departure – Kazakhstan. The parcel arrived a few days ago and was waiting to depart along the further route.
The dog froze, silently fixing his gaze on the box. The policeman had no doubts – there was clearly something illegal there.
A search dog rarely makes mistakes; in the practice of an officer, there has never been a case where it mistakenly allocated a passenger or cargo.
The dog handler commanded and allowed the dog to come closer. But she suddenly jumped onto the box, which was quite large.
It was similar to other boxes and boxes arriving at the airport, so it did not visually arouse suspicion. The only difference that the policeman noticed when looking very carefully – several small holes around the perimeter.
The dog could not contain his excitement, was mobile and whined a little, looking at his owner. It became clear – inside the box there is something that attracted the dog’s attention more than prohibited substances or large sums of money. The dog handler began to think about his further actions and prepare for the search.
What’s inside?
Other airport workers have already gathered around the box. They carefully lifted her from the floor and carefully carried her to the table for inspection. Everyone understood perfectly well that there could be explosives inside, so they acted extremely carefully. Any careless movement could lead to dire consequences
Before taking any further actions, a group of sappers was called – it was necessary to scan the contents. Of course, the likelihood of finding explosives is small, because the box has been at the airport for quite a long time, and has been checked more than once. But no one wanted to take risks.
All those present left the premises and waited for the end of the sapper group inspection. Only the search dog was still eager to return to the box, which was very strange for such a trained dog. The dog handler had never noticed such behavior from his pet before, and they worked together for many years.
The strange behavior of the service dog awakened various fears and assumptions in the officer – what was so special in this luggage.
While the sapper team was scanning and checking the box, the police discussed their further actions. It was decided to open it slowly and carefully. When this was done, and those present were able to look inside, their surprise knew no bounds.
These officers with extensive life experience have seen a lot in their lifetime: money, drugs, explosives, smuggled goods of all kinds and sizes. But never like this –!
…two little tiger cubs. They hid in sawdust and looked extremely emaciated and weak. It was clear that they were very exhausted and had been in this box for a long time. It is not surprising that the dog was so eager to reach them.
The kids were very scared by the bright light, the noise around them and the many people searching the dirty box. No one could have guessed how long they had been here. But it was clear that a very long time ago, several days without food and water.
Their feces were everywhere, sawdust was saturated with urine, worms and some insects were crawling along the walls. It’s amazing that no one has noticed this stinking box before, because the smell when opened was simply terrible.
Animal welfare was immediately called. Its representatives took the tiger cubs and placed them in a special shelter. There they were provided with the necessary medical care.
At first it seemed that the animals would not survive such traumatic events. It seemed like a miracle that they survived in this box at all. The tiger cubs were named Tobby and Sophie, they were a boy and a girl. They were left to live in an orphanage and deserved to be cared for and treated. Fortunately, they were not separated and were left together.
As for their origin, the police found that they were sold from a zoo in Kazakhstan and were part of a litter of 5 kittens. It’s good that the fate of these two was resolved successfully. What happened to their brothers and sisters is unknown, because they were probably sent to other addresses. The zoo director was arrested and sentenced to a long prison term.
Unfortunately, such smuggling of animals is still practiced in conditions that are completely inadequate for the safety and health of the poor.
