The Secret Nobody Knew
No one moved.
No one breathed.Emily was standing.
Barely.
Shaking.
Terrified.
But standing.
Tears streamed down her face as she stared at her own feet touching the marble floor.
The orchestra players lowered their instruments.
Champagne glasses slipped from trembling hands.
Her father looked like he had seen a ghost.
“No…” he whispered.
Emily looked at the boy.
“How…?”
The boy smiled softly.
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out an old folded photograph.
Emily took it with shaking fingers.
Her eyes widened instantly.
In the picture were two children—
a little girl in a blue dress…
and a barefoot boy standing beside her.
The same boy.
The same eyes.
Twenty years ago.
Emily stared at him.
Impossible.
“No…” she whispered.
Her father suddenly went pale.
Emily looked at him.
“Dad…”
Her voice trembled.
“…who is he?”
The father stepped backward.
Because he knew.
He had known the entire time.
And with tears filling his eyes, he whispered:
“He’s the boy I paid to disappear.”
