My husband forgot his medication at home, so I decided to drop it off at his office on my way to work. But when I asked the receptionist to let him know I was there, she stared at me in confusion.
“Ma’am, your husband has been on leave for an entire week.”
I stood there, completely stunned.
Just a few hours earlier, Eliam had followed his usual morning routine. He got dressed, grabbed his laptop, kissed me goodbye, and left the house as though he had another ordinary workday ahead of him.
Nothing about his behavior had seemed unusual.
About ten minutes after he left, I noticed his medication sitting untouched beside the coffee maker.
His office was conveniently located along my commute, so I figured I could stop by and give it to him.
On the way, I even picked up his favorite coffee.
I thought he would appreciate the surprise.
When I arrived at the front desk, I greeted the receptionist warmly.
“Good morning. I’m Eliam’s wife. He forgot his medication this morning. Would you mind calling him down?”
She typed something into her computer.
Then her expression changed.
She glanced at the screen before looking back at me.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. Eliam isn’t here. He’s been on leave since last week.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t process what she’d said.
I managed a small smile, thanked her, and walked away before the confusion on my face turned into something more obvious.
The moment I got inside my car, my hands began trembling.
For five consecutive mornings, my husband had left home dressed for work.
Every evening, he’d returned with stories about stressful meetings, unreasonable colleagues, and long drives through rush-hour traffic.
Yet according to his office, he hadn’t shown up all week.
So where had he actually been going?
Eliam and I had been married for eleven years.
Throughout that time, I’d trusted him completely.
I’d never felt the need to inspect his messages, check his location, or demand explanations about where he spent his days.
But suddenly, the ordinary details of our marriage seemed suspicious.
I picked up my phone, intending to call him immediately.
Then I stopped.
If he’d been deliberately misleading me for five days, what made me think he’d tell the truth now?
I decided to test him instead.
I sent a short text.
“You forgot your medication this morning.”
His reply came within seconds.
“It’s been absolute chaos at the office today. I’ll grab it when I get home.”
I stared at those words.
Then I read them a second time.
He hadn’t misunderstood anything.
He wasn’t simply withholding information.
He was actively pretending to be somewhere he wasn’t.
Until then, part of me had been searching for a reasonable explanation.
Maybe the receptionist had made a mistake.
Maybe he was working remotely from another location.
Maybe there was something I didn’t understand.
But his message made one thing painfully clear.
My husband was hiding something from me.
For the rest of the afternoon, I could barely concentrate.
My imagination wandered toward possibilities I didn’t even want to acknowledge.
Was there another woman?
Had he lost his job?
Was he dealing with some kind of trouble he was too ashamed to discuss?
When he arrived home that night, he behaved exactly as he always did.
He greeted me affectionately, asked about my day, and complained about how draining work had been.
I listened without revealing what I’d discovered.
By bedtime, I’d reached a decision.
I needed to know where he was going before confronting him.
The next morning, I watched Eliam gather his belongings and head toward the driveway.
He kissed my forehead and said he’d probably have another busy day.
I smiled and wished him luck.
Then, a few minutes after his car disappeared down the street, I got into mine.
For the first time in eleven years of marriage, I followed my husband without his knowledge.
I stayed several vehicles behind him, careful not to attract his attention.
At first, he drove along his normal route.
Then we approached the intersection where he always turned toward his workplace.
I watched his brake lights.
He didn’t make the turn.
Instead, he continued straight through the intersection.
My chest tightened.
He drove for another twenty minutes, crossing into a part of town we rarely visited.
Eventually, he pulled into the parking area outside an unfamiliar red-brick building.
I parked across the street, where I could watch without being easily noticed.
Eliam climbed out of his car, retrieved his laptop, and walked confidently through the main entrance.
Clearly, this wasn’t his first visit.
I remained in my car, trying to make sense of what I was seeing.
A few minutes passed.
Then the entrance doors opened again.
Eliam stepped outside.
But he wasn’t alone.
Someone had come out with him.
I leaned toward the windshield, narrowing my eyes to see the person’s face.
And the instant I recognized who was standing beside my husband, every thought vanished from my mind.
My fingers went numb.
My phone nearly slipped from my hand.
Because of all the people Eliam could have been secretly meeting, this was the one person I never would have imagined.
