My 10-year-old daughter called me sobbing from a vacation with my ex and his new wife. Two hours later, I found her hiding in a summer cabin with part of her hair cut off and the word “LIAR” written across her hoodie.

My 10-year-old daughter called me sobbing from a vacation with my ex and his new wife. By sunset, I knew exactly why they had forbidden her to call and which one of them had sacrificed her to protect himself.

Henry and I had been divorced for a year. He married Brooke three months later.

Even when Brooke kept nudging her to say “New Mom,” Mary would smile politely and change the subject.

So when Henry said he wanted to take her to a lakeside resort for four days before school started, I said yes.

At the car, I kissed her forehead and said, “Call me if you need me for anything. I mean anything.”

She smiled. “I know, Mom.”

On the third afternoon, my phone rang.

“Mom, please come get me,” Mary whispered, crying so hard I could barely hear her. “Please hurry.”

Before she could answer, I heard a door bang open.

Then Brooke’s voice came through the phone.

“Mary, I told you not to call anyone.”

The line went dead.

I called again and again until my hand shook so badly I nearly dropped the phone.

Then I grabbed my keys.

I just remember gripping the wheel and hearing Mary’s voice in my head.

By the time I reached the resort, the sky was already turning gold.

I knocked once.

Brooke opened the door.

The look on her face changed the second she saw me.

“Where is Mary?”

Brooke crossed her arms. “She’s asleep.”

Henry appeared behind her so fast it was obvious they had been standing there listening.“We spent all day outside,” he said. “She was exhausted.”

“Claire, you’re upsetting yourself for nothing.”
